64-bit technology, slow to hit the desktop space
The release of Windows Vista should kick-start the migration

64-bit processors have been around for some time but have only recently started to show up on the desktop PC in the past couple of years. Right now the software applications to take advantage of the technology are scarce. The 64-bit chips offer greater performance attributes than their 32-bit counterparts due to speed and other architectural enhancements. One of the main benefits of 64-bit computing is that significant virtual memory can be utilized. Right now 32 bit technology will allow up to 4 GB of memory however with 64-bit technology up to 16 Terabytes are possible. See Table #1 below for 32-bit vs. 64-bit comparison based on Microsoft's XP 64-bit edition.

Of course there are some performance benefits to running 32-bit software on 64-bit chips, but the main advantages emerge when 64-bit chips are matched with 64-bit software. With the except for a few workstation users, almost no one is getting much out of the 64-bit technology yet. The scarcity can be attributed to the lack of available application software.
Microsoft released a 64-bit version of Windows for desktops last year but has sold very few copies, according to analysts.

Bottom line:
In all fairness, AMD, the biggest proponent of 64-bit desktop computing, didn't expect an overnight revolution. Intel had predicted that main stream users wouldn't see the emergence of 64-bit applications until some time within the 2007-2008 time periods. Nevertheless anticipation of 64-bit technology continues to build.
