The Industrial Grade PC vs. Its Office Grade Counterpart
Why do I need an Industrial Grade PC?

By: Ed Boutiler, President & CEO
STEALTH COMPUTER CORPORATION

Part 2:

Penny wise and desktop foolish!

In the era of the tight budgets, and the focus on the bottom line, industry is willing to squeeze any and all excess costs out of the day-to-day operations. What would possess any sane engineer or purchasing agent to approve use of an office grade computer in a hostile industrial environment? A trip down to the local business warehouse or by calling a toll free number in a computer magazine will save you big bucks right?

Desktop machines are wonderful things. They are very popular due to their low cost and ease of use. When a commercial office grade PC is used in an environment where the application can handle occasional downtimes it works well. Not only is it cost effective but there is a multitude of expertise out there to fix it or simply replace it with another until it is repaired. For the average computer user who is writing a letter, balancing a spreadsheet or surfing the Web a system crash or disk drive failure although very irritating usually is not a crucial situation. You wear different clothes when you work on the shop floor than you would in an office. Desk top PC’s are about as inappropriate as wearing an Armani suit on the shop floor. Its a matter of choosing the right tool for the job.

In an increasingly competitive world more companies are discovering that computer downtime has become unacceptable and extremely costly. In recent years the PC has become so integrated with daily business functions that it could grind a companies operations to a halt. Mission critical applications that fail cost companies substantially. Yet in spite of all this many people tend to take these machines for granted. They are not conscious of what happens to a business when the basis of its revenue generation depends on computers that fail. While the cost of downtime varies among manufacturers it is always expensive. When systems go down they can stay down not only resulting in lost revenues but the loss of data as well. In today’s world a company’s most valuable non-human resource is its data.

FAQ- What is a NIT?
Industry standard reference for Brightness of LCD Monitors

A NIT is a measurement of light in candelas per meter square (Cd/m2) For an LCD monitor it is brightness out of the front panel of the display. A NIT is a good basic reference when comparing brightness from monitor to monitor. Most desktop LCD’s or Notebook LCD’s have a brightness of 200 to 250 Nits. These standard LCD’s are not readable in direct or even indirect sunlight as they become washed out.

How do I know how many NIT’s I require for my application?

Applications will vary depending on the location of the LCD and how much ambient light is available that could cause the display to become washed out or unreadable. As a rule of thumb; notebooks and desktop LCD’s which are generally used in office light conditions are in the 200-250 nit range. For indoor use with uncontrolled or indirect sunlight it is recommended that a display of 500 – 900 nits be used. If the application is outdoors or in direct sunlight then at least 1000 nits and up should be considered.
